Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 0.75 ounces pure maple syrup
  • 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 4-5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters (optional)
  • ice
  • lemon or orange wheel (for garnish)

Method

  1. In a shaker, gently muddle the mint leaves with the maple syrup (and optionally a small piece of star anise) to release the flavor.
  2. Add the bourbon, fresh lemon juice, ice, and bitters (if using) to the shaker.
  3. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.
  5. Garnish with a lemon wheel, mint sprig, or a whole star anise for aroma.

Notes

  • If you’re using star anise in the shake, a small piece is plenty—too much can overpower the drink.
  • Bitters are optional but help balance the sweetness and highlight the spices.
  • A cinnamon stick as a stirrer is another simple way to add aroma without muddling extra spices.
  • Adjust maple syrup to taste—0.5–0.75 oz is usually perfect depending on how sweet you like it.
